Yesterday I went on a field trip with Joshua and several of the second grade classes to the American Village in Montevallo. It was a great field trip and I was VERY impressed by it! All the kids split up into groups and the names of the groups were some of the original colonies. We were Massachusetts. The first place we went the kids all ended up acting out Paul Revere's ride. It was fun and hilarious to watch! Here are the Redcoats and Joshua and his group protecting the gunpowder in Concord from the Redcoats when they marched on the "city".

Joshua thought it was great!

Next we went to a field and they played several games. First though, they were taught how the gentleman bows and the lady curtsies. Joshua tried to mimic the curtsey.

We next went to the beautiful chapel there and learned some about the Boston Tea Party. The kids learned a saying that was said everytime the guy said Rally Mohawks. I can't remember it all but something like "tell King George we will pay no taxes on the foreign tea." They then marched up to the "ship" all the while shouting their new saying and waving their tomehawks. When they got to the "ship" the leader took the guy on the ship prisoner and we adults handed the kids boxes of "tea" (you can see them in the picture below) and the kids lined up and passed them to the man where he "threw" them overboard.

We left there and went to see Lydia Barrow ( I think was her name). She was a spy and sent messages to Washington in a coat that her son wore. The children had to help because she had an important message to get to Washington and her son was away and it couldn't wait until he got back. One child had to wear the coat and they went to the Tavern and used some code phrases to be let in and the lady took the message from the coat's button.

As you can see, it was very interactive and the kids had a great time!
