Thursday morning, I met Joshua's class at Aldridge Garden's for their field trip. It was REALLY neat and they had a great time and learned a lot! They first had a scavenger hunt and we hunted for a list of things - like a leaf with a hole in it, tall grass, webbed feet, an oval rock, a spider web, etc... We didn't pick the things up but just marked them when we found it.

There were a lot of moms there, so we split up into groups. I had Joshua and two others in my group.

Joshua's class- minus one who was sick that day.

Joshua's teacher was talking with them about what they were learning, while they were wating to hear about the worms.

A lady taught the kids about worms- I learned a whole lot that I never knew about worms. It was very interesting. Here the kids are smelling the dirt the worms are in, to see how it smells. (since that particular dirt is mainly their waste.)

They got to look at them through a magnifying glass and we could see their hearts and intestines! Really neat! The kids had a great time. They each got a small amount of dirt and went through it, removing any worms, eggs etc... and put them in a small cup. When they were done, they put them in a new box that they were making for the worms. (to raise them in.)

They next went to a garden and learned about 4 different soil types- clay, sand, humus and potting soil.

They then went to four different flower beds and had to pick out which one had humus in it. Almost all of them got it right. Here are the winners watching the lady tell the few who got it wrong, where the right one was.

They then learned how each flower bed had the same kind of plants planted in the same spots in them and saw the difference the soil makes. One bed was made of clay, one of sand, one of humus and one of potting soil. It was neat to see the difference.

Then they divided up into groups of 4 or 5 at each of the 4 flower beds. Each group had to take the soils temperature and pour water in it and see how fast it soaked up. They then compared the results. Very fascinating and the kids really enjoyed it!

Here are some of the boys, waiting to go get on the bus when they were done. It was funny watching the differences of the boys and girls. For the most part the girls sat and talked and the boys talked and poked, play fought each other.
